The gaming cynic tends to regard any game self-labeled as “steampunk” as a vain attempt to obscure an obvious lack of character. So it is that something as strikingly bizarre as Spate does itself a disservice by co-opting that label, because it’s a needless resort.

Assuming the role of a gas mask-donning detective by the name of Bluth (OH YOU REVERENT PROFESSIONAL ANIMATORS), a recent hire places you on a platformer-hopping journey through a mysterious, persistently-precipitous province with the mysterious nomenclature of “The XZone” to track down a mysterious businessman. It’s all very mysterious, you understand.

There is a Kickstarter, of course; belay your apprehensions, however, as it is thoroughly deserving of your credence. Spate is a marvelous-looking project with a tacit intent and professional polish and it’s projects like these that should be deployed as a banner for the Kickstarter agenda.

Current release plans are for it to be shipped DRM-free only on Windows. An independent, client-free distribution could be assumed but further details aren’t being offered.

Microtone - Flash and Unity

Designed in Unity with a Flash framework? Everybody’s hugging!

Microtone is a trippy dippy little puzzle jaunt made in both Flash and Unity. The idea is to guide your planar square around an Escherian playground and collect little black exes by flopping onto them. However, the trick is to get all of the exes visible by exposing different angles of each stage. It’s a smooth morsel of play that tickles both hemispheres for a little more than a few minutes. Want to take a break from your Facebooking for a bit?
