8-Bit arts:

Been trying my best to spend extra time I have working on art projects. I wanna get back into that world.

Been playing around with some pixel based stuff like these. I’ve always had a thing for characters that use this type of bomb. Figured I would play around with it as a theme. Thus far I’ve done,

Bomberman (Bomberman)

Mouser (Super Mario Bros. 2)

Damazu-Dayuu (Ninja Jajamaru-Kun)

The Mad Bomber (Kaboom!)

Really been having a lot of fun with it. Feel free to comment or make any suggestions towards characters in video games that also use bombs of this style. I am aware of Bomb Man (Mega Man) and Link (Legend of Zelda).

- from Shovel Knight (Yacht Club Games, 2013 - PC, Wii U, 3DS - Est. price, $10)
“Forsooth!” proclaimeth the Shovel Knight, “for my arms are sturdy and my trowel true! Wherefore must I withdraw my digging for this, how you say, ‘inspiration?”
And so proclaimeth his masters at Yacht Club Games, “We can just stop at the entire NES Capcom catalogue, good sir.”
One can see glimpses in the game’s trailer of nearly everything made of Capcom during their 8-bit heyday. There’s a bit of DuckTales in there, some of the radial boss progression that Mega Man made famous, a little tile-chucking like the kind one used to make Chip & Dale do until their little Rescue Ranging paws got sore. Considering this gushing reverence to these trademark tropes of gaming’s past, one shouldn’t be surprised that the crew of Yacht Club Games have also been responsible in part for such retro-infused fare as Contra 4 and A Boy and His Blob while during their time at WayFoward.
Yonce! Here be the Kickstarter for a groundbreaking victorious and if, perchance, wouldst thee shine a Greenlight on Shovel Knight’s tilling tales of shoveling chivalry?
Edit: Shovel Knight is definitely hitting them consoles. Stretch goals? Bah.

Valence aims to be an accessible roguelike that sets itself apart through focusing on key elements, offering clear goals, an immersive art style, and a large amount of balanced content. Nothing in Valence will be “thrown in” or feel like padding; every upgrade will interact with every other upgrade and give visual as well as interactive feedback on its properties.

indiegamehunt:

Chasm is looking mighty impressive in this third development video, which shows off the hack’n slash platformer’s handsome pixel art, smooth animation, and great music. And you gotta love the floating eyeball monsters—and cutting them into bloody halves with your sword.

The game is unashamedly retro, but that’s 16-bit not 8-bit, thank you very much. It shows some obvious Zelda II influence, but I’m also reminded of Cadash, Magic Sword, and Black Tiger, which are some of my all-time favorite arcade games.

So far, Chasm feels like videogame comfort food. I think Discord Games (48 Chambers, Take Arms) has a potential hit on their hands here.

Like a less trigger-happy Project Black Sun, it seems. Stamped: “Awesome.” And weeee, there’s a Greenlight page as well!

Mega Man 1-6 coming to 3DS Virtual Console
The biggest Mega Man news today is Street Fighter X Mega Man, out free today on PC, but there’s cool stuff for 3DS too! Capcom’s going to release Mega Man 1-6 on 3DS Virtual Console starting December 27.
Mega Man 2 will be out on Feb. 7, and the rest will be distributed throughout 2013. I will buy all of them, because that’s the kind of sucker I am.

Wizorb (and Tiny) now on your iPhone

tinycartridge:

Tribute Games’ wonderful Breakout/RPG hybrid Wizorb is now available for iPhones and iPads, which means so is our mascot Tiny, who makes a cameo in the game.

I can’t believe how many platforms Tiny has now appeared on because of Wizorb — Xbox Live Indie Games, Windows/Mac, PlayStation Network, and now iPhones!

It’s a fantastic game that combines brick breaking with a fantasy RPG. And it has a charming retro look from Paul Robertson, maker of rad pixelart and animations.

Buy: Wizorb for Windows/Mac/Linux

I guess the only avenue left to cover by Tribute is the z-Axis of Nintendo’s pocket kingdom? Don’t know if that would guarantee a repeat purchase for me, but I’ve been enjoying the crap out of the Steam version either way.

How well would an Arka-like - such as Wizorb - play on a smearscreen, do you think?
