“THIS GAME IS NOT SUITABLE FOR ANYONE UNDER 17.” You’ve got to love the apologetic peals of that disclaimer.
To many Rare fans, this was the Coda to the Golden Age of Rare, which means that I’m most likely never going to give this one up (and is also why I’m picking up some digital engineering classes in the Fall - just in case my N64 ever decides to take a walk.)
Some people kind of gloss over this one due to the caustic nature of the narrative, and I can’t help but consider that a massive loss if you’re in any way interested in games as a storytelling medium. It’s a great comedy riff of a Brooksian stripe about some deeply flawed individuals that always seem familiarly out of place, even in their own native, trope-laden, “funny animal” habitat. The game begins in an uncomfortable situation and gleefully descends into a webbed miasma of misunderstandings, misfortune, gouging social commentary and SO MUCH FECES.
You know, I think I meant to say “Boschian” when I said “Brooksian.” Serves a mug right for indulging in collegiate wankspeak.
Conker’s BFD does do spoofs (including one miserable Matrix level,) but they’re sagely deployed and aren’t prone to interruption. Besides, referencing anything that takes the piss out of A Clockwork Orange for monkeyshines deserves a gold star for style.
This was also, I believe, one of the 1st mainstream games to confront the player with the notion that “finishing” a game might have little to do with a win condition - nobody comes out of a Bad Fur Day smelling like a rose.
